Installing a swing mount is a straightforward process that you can safely do yourself with the right tools and a little preparation. This guide will walk you through the steps to securely mount your swing for aerial yoga, relaxation, or other activities. I am comfortable with tools and construction in Canadian homes, for me, this took about 45 minutes from start to finish. You may take more or less time, the important thing is doing it right, and mounting your swing safely.

The stability and safety of your mount depend on a proper installation into a load-bearing beam or solid wood blocking. The most critical step is finding a sturdy, load-bearing point in your ceiling. A stud finder is the best tool for this. You are looking for a solid wooden beam, or "back blocking," that is firmly attached to your ceiling joists. Once you locate the beam, use painter's tape to mark the edges. This makes it easy to visualize and work with.
When we finished our basement, we included two back blocking locations for mounting a heavy duty ceiling anchor points. They are made from 3 layers of 2x10 screwed together and anchored to the ceiling joists with additional supports added. It was originally intended as heavy bag mounts for a home gym, but things change!
Using your pencil, mark the precise center of the beam on the painter's tape. Then, hold the ceiling mount kit up to the ceiling, aligning it with your center mark. With the pencil, mark the exact spots where the holes for the bolts will go. Using painter's tape helps prevent scuff marks on your ceiling while you're positioning the mount. Consult a professional if you need to.
This is an important step to ensure the bolts go in straight and to prevent the wood from splitting. Attach the 3/16-inch drill bit to your drill. A helpful tip is to mark the required depth (e.g., 6 cm) on the drill bit with a piece of tape to ensure you don't drill too deep. Put on your eye protection and carefully drill a pilot hole at each of the marks you made in the previous step. Bonus if you have a drill with a built in level to keep the holes straight!
Now you will attach the mount to the ceiling. Place a washer on each of the lag bolts. Then, insert the bolts through the holes in the ceiling mount. Use the 13mm socket and the 1/4-inch socket wrench to drive the lag bolts firmly into the pilot holes in the ceiling. As you tighten, ensure the bolts pass through the washer and the mount before entering the wood. Continue tightening until the mount is flush against the ceiling and feels completely secure. Do not over tighten. You may strip the wood out or crush the drywall resulting in an unsafe mount.
Once the mount is firmly in place, you can add the included decorative caps over the heads of the bolts for a clean, finished look. The installation is now complete, and your mount is ready for use.
I used a piece of rope to thread through and hang from the mount to test it out before installing the swing. I'm 260lbs, so not a small guy, and it held without budging or making scary about to fail sounds. After testing, I mounted our swing, and took some photos!
Protect Your Eyes: Wear safety glasses or other eye protection to guard against sawdust and falling debris while drilling the pilot holes.
Stay Safe on a Ladder: Use a sturdy ladder to ensure you can safely reach the mounting location without straining.
Trust Your Stud Finder: Always use a stud finder to confirm you have located the correct spot. Do not attempt to mount the swing into drywall alone, as it will not hold the weight and could lead to injury.
Use Painter's Tape: As noted in the steps, painter's tape makes it much easier to mark your ceiling without leaving permanent pencil marks or scuffs.
